Question
QUESTION: hi i just had my Chihuahua and had her spayed on 2-14-08 and now she has been carrying around her stuff toys around and crying. this has only been going since 24 hrs after coming home and she is always crying. i was told by my friend that it could be her way of thinking the toys are her puppies. she has never had a litter at all she weighs approximate 6.5lbs. if you can help me in anyway please let me know.  thanks

ANSWER: Your dog may have been close to going into season when spayed.  Her estrogen levels might be elevated while no progesterone was introduced into her system, as happens when a bitch goes into season.  I would basically ignore this "nesting" behavior as it should pass within ten to fourteen days.  If it persists past a month, visit the veterinarian who can give you temporary hormone medication.

QUESTION: Thank you for your answer it was helpful, but the vet said that her ovaries area was enlarged or they was big. she had just came out of heat and done did the bleeding and etc, just before the surgery.I called them back the day after the surgery and told them what she was doing with the stuff animals they told me they didn't know why she would be doing this due to the fact she (snickers) has not ever been pregnant. it is very nerving to listen to her cry like this cause she has never been like this snickers is eight months old. I'm going to share your answer with the vet when we go back to have the stitches removed or look at.  thank you norma

Answer
An enlarged ovary is quite unusual in a female dog and might involve hormonal excretions (even Humans with ovarian cysts can suffer hormonal response.)  She's obviously suffering from a false pregnancy and, since your veterinarian doesn't seem to understand the dynamics between ovarian enlargement/estrogen involvement, I suggest you find one who has a higher level of diagnostic skill.  Sit tight and wait it out; she should fully recover from this.
