urinating after being housebroken for 3 years

Question
My kids and I recently went on vacation for a week and had a friend come and let my two dogs out two or three times a day. Apparently they didn't do a very good job of letting them out regularly because the dogs began urinating downstairs and in my living room on the main floor. I am still trying to correct them from doing this as they have continued now that we are home. I limit access while we are gone and they are only allowed in the kitchen and my bedroom. Problem seemed solved by doing this but my oldest, and best obeying dog, came downstairs while I went to do laundry and started to pee right in front of me! I don't know what to do with either of them now. They seem to think it is OK to pee wherever they feel like it. I love them dearly so please help me to help them. Robin

Answer
You're sure it is both dogs having accidents? My first thought is that the oldest dog might have a urinary tract infection. I'd get that checked out. Thoroughly clean the soiled areas with a good enzymatic cleaner - let it soak and really scrub it. If the dogs check out healthy, you are on the right track by limiting their options and supervising. I'd start taking them out more often than you think they need to go, and pretend they aren't housetrained (because at the moment, they aren't! If it's a health issue, that should be fixable, and if it isn't, with good retraining by you, they'll soon resume their good habits. Sandy Case MEd, CPDT www.positivelycanine.com
