potty training issue with new Westie girl

Question
Hello, I currently have one male Westie (Winston), who is 5 months old, and we just got a little female Westie who is 4 months old (Gracie). We got Winston when he was 8 weeks old, and we had him completely potty trained (without crating him) within about a week (about 3 days to rid him of doing it deliberately, and about a week to stop the "accidents"). The house we previously lived in had a dog door, so he was trained on that as well. We got Gracie about 5 days ago, from a puppy store that she had been at for 2 months (since she was 2 months old). She lived in a display crate 24/7, with minimal play time, and no potty training. The first night we had her, she went to the bathroom all over the house, so we crated her the next day while at work. She did not potty in her crate whatsoever and I took her outside when I got home, and she went immediately. The 2nd and 3rd night, we started letting her sleep on the bed with us and our other Westie, and she did great. The 4th night, she managed to jump off our extremely high bed and poop in the floor. In the mornings, I will sit outside with them, try to coax her by saying "go potty" in an upbeat voice and it has worked once or twice and I always praise her and give treats (this worked with Winston). But the last 2 days, she just sits there and follows me around, and this will go on for about an hour and she just sits stares at me, then we go inside and she immediately poops or pees. I do understand that she never was trained and she was allowed to go potty in her cage whenever she wanted, and it almost seems like she thinks going inside is right, and outside is wrong. We have considered potty training classes, and/ or installing a dog door in our new house (which would benefit them both). Please help! We love her and don't want to have to constantly scold her or crate her! THANK YOU!!

Answer
Hi, April,

Thanks for the question.

I would recommend either buying HOW TO HOUSEBREAK YOUR DOG IN 7 DAYS by Shirlee Kalstone, or talking to a local trainer. There are far too many ins and outs of housebreaking for me to go into here.

I WILL say this, if you give Gracie enough opportunities to do her business outside, use the crate judiciously (not keep her in for more than 4 hrs. at a time, max), don't let her sleep in the bed, and praise her like crazy every time she goes where she's supposed to (make it feel like a huge celebration, but DON'T give her treats), she'll eventually get it. You have some disadvantages going in (the pet store), but you also have a really strong advantage in that she may very well learn this stuff at least partially from Winston.

Best of luck,

LCK
