Question

The mischevious pup
I have a 6 month old english bulldog pup. Before her I've had 3 other Englsih Bulldogs housetrained with great success. I've really been struggling with our latest addition. She sometimes remembers that she has to go wee outside,it's getting better day by day.The latest thing she has been doing has me worried though. I've had huge pillows made for them to lie on in our living room. However she seems to constantly urinate on them. I wash them but that very night she urinates on the again. According to what I know only males mark their territory and my 4 year old isn't displaying such behaviour. I try not to spank her and rather just chase her out as she normally leaks whenever she's yelled at or spanked. I just don't know what to do anymore. Can you help?

Answer
Hi Janna,   These problems seem to be exponential.   The more dogs in the house the harder it is for the newest one to adjust.   So many new smells, personalities & rules.   However, this pup should be farther along than this.   All dogs should go through some kind of basic training.   By 6 months, this should be getting over & this pup is just starting, so you're going to have to be even more serious & structured.
All dogs need to be crate trained.  All dogs should be taught to stand tied.  All dogs need a place to call their own both inside (a crate or dogbox), and outdoors (a kennel or a chain.)  It helps a great deal if the dog can get under some kind of shelter when he's outside (like a doghouse).  This gives the trainer more flexibility & can be a real asset to housebreaking & crying at night.  Anyway, you can probably see where I'm going with this.  This dog should NEVER be allowed to just run free unsupervised, inside or outside.  Make the dog earn everything it gets.  When she's loose in the house, watch her & teach her.  These periods are all supervised training sessions.  If she makes a mistake, no need to spank or chase her.  Scold her & cuss if you want, she needs to know who's mad at her. Then put her in her box, kennel or chain for time out, depending on the offense.  Try not to let her make mistakes, make good behavior a habit.
This is all basic stuff & there are many variations on the theme, it should be kinda' fun for both dog & trainer.  It doesn't happen over night though, this simple outline will take many months to implement.   Hope this helps a little Jana, Thanks for asking,

Oh yeah, both male & female dogs mark territory, the males are just better at it.
