Question
I have a 3yr old cat, that is very sweet, but at times can be mean. He likes things done his way, and only his way. Hes mean to my other cat, and bullies her around. He hisses at me if I get angry with his and has even tried to hit me with his paw. He is very, very dominant. I want a puppy and I do not know if I can handle him.

Answer
Samantha,

I have two like that too. They are like kids, they have temper tantrums and try to see what they can get away with.

Usually that is their basic personality and they are not going to change. You just have to 'work around' it.
Scold or punish him when he gets mad. Say "NO! Knock it off!" firmly and loudly, then ignore him. When he is nice, then pet him. He has to associate his temper with no petting or attention. The same when he is being a bully.

If there is no fur flying or blood being shed then I wouldn't worry too much about your other cat. That is kitty communication and he is reminding her that he is 'boss' and she is letting him.

About a puppy? If the cat is dominant then he will probably 'train' the puppy too. It all depends on the personality of the puppy. They may 'school' each other. You can try it, but you may have your hands full! But then cats can surprise you. There is no 'normal' behavior with cats and your 3 yr old may take to the puppy right off and be instant friends.

If you do get a puppy, let me know how it goes.
