Answer
Fiona,

Sometimes it just isn't going to work. Maybe your 3 year old doesn't want another cat for company. It sounds like she is pretty stressed out about it. It's not fair to the kitten either. I would take the kitten to a friend or neighbor's house for a few days and see if your cat settles down and returns to her normal self. If she does, then I would sadly find the kitten a new home. She may suffer permanent damage to her personality if it continues, or make herself sick.

If you want to try again, I would try a cat around her own age and temperment. Though your cat may be very territorial about you and her home and does not want any 'intruders' to share with. (Is she a calico? It sounds like it!) And a lot of cats do not like kittens. Maybe because of their smell, or how energetic they are, or their size.

For now, to relieve your cat's stress and to protect the kitten, I would remove the kitten from your home.
