Adopted Cornish Rex Rescue

Question
Hi -
2 part question:
1) I adopted a Cornish Rex from a shelter - I was so shocked to find this Rex in our local Animal Welfare Shelter that I adopted as soon as they would let me.  He is 1.5 yrs old and was very playful.  He seemed very affectionate for being rescued and seemed to say Thank you Thank you Thank you.  His athletic ability is amazing.  We love him.  He seemed like he needed a play mate - and so I got a young kitten for his company.  I am unfamilar with Cornish Rex personality but all of a sudden he won't have anything to do with me.  He won't let me hold him any longer nor will he sleep with me. He doesn't sit to watch T.V. or help me on my computer. Do you think this is a phase for him?  I am heartbroken that he won't do anything with me any longer. I thought a second cat would be a great idea because I just oculdn't play with him like he needed to be played with.  My only true regret is not waiting until I found a siamese or other more athletic cat.

2) Also can you tell me about health problems that are common with Cornish Rex cats?

Answer
Hi Melissa!

I too am shocked that you found a young Cornish Rex at an animal shelter!  I wonder what the circumstances were?  You just never know.  Cornish Rex are not the kind of cat to sit in your lap all day to be petted. They are very active and like to play play play.  Mine is older now, and she likes for me to love on her, but not for a very long time.  These cats are considered high strung, I suppose.  I just love them though.  He probably is enjoying his time with the kitten you got for him to play with.  I think as he ages, he will be more affectionate, but in my experience, the younger cats are too hyper to sit still long enough! LOL   I haven't really run across any health issues at all and haven't really heard of any either.  I used to show this breed, and I would have heard about that if it were the case.  Enjoy your good fortune for finding a CR at the shelter, he is a very special cat!

God Bless,
Becky
