Roundworms

Question
We have a 5 1/2 month old kitten and two children - ages 3 and 6.  The kitten was wormed at around 5 and 8 weeks and had fecal exams at each vaccination visit.  Last week, he vomited up a roundworm and was found to be infected with both roundworm and tapeworm.  The vet recommended keeping him away from the children for the next 2 weeks since he is being wormed again and will be shedding worms/eggs.

Obviously, my children are not playing in or around the litterbox.  My concern is whether he could track these microscopic roundworm eggs all over our home and the children could become infected.  My 3 year old lives on the floor; that is just where she plays and I am very concerned about her.

I have read every online article I can find on roundworm and most address the issue of roundworms in soil/the outdoor environment.  I cannot find many addressing the problem of roundworms in the home.  I keep a clean house but obviously, if the kitten CAN track these eggs from the litterbox through the house and my child lays her toys on the floor, I am not going to disinfect these toys each time they are out for play.

Kitty is in the garage right now on the vet's advice and I am just trying to decide if the stress of keeping him is worth it or if I need to find him a new home.  I know that he will have to be wormed again in 2 weeks so I figure he will be shedding eggs for at least another month.

Thank you.

Answer
I do not believe that it is very likely Kitty is going to be tracking eggs throughout the house.  If he is a very dirty cat, meaning doesn't keep himself very clean, then it is possible that he could have feces on his feet and track it, but cat's tend to be very fastidious and you would see dirty little prints.  As to whether or not it is worth it to keep the kitten it is up to you.  However, if he is a strictly indoor cat and he is the only pet in the house it is highly unlikely they he will pick up roundworms again.  He most likely got them before you got him.
