Kitten with diarrhea and Grooming problems

Question
My 6 week old kitten is having problems with her bowel movements (5+/day). She either has diarrhea or VERY smelly and very frequent bowel movements. I was wondering if there is a specific food that could help with that (I heard Science Diet). Also she goes completely nuts over real meat. She is normally very mild mannered but will become very aggressive and mean around meat or human food. This is an issue when we try to eat. Also she doesn't clean herself well in respect to the bowel movements, even when her bowel is regular.  She is a rescued kitten and I am wondering if maybe because she didn't have a mother to teach her that's why. However, I was under the impression it was instinctual.  I have been using baby wipes on her but this is a real problem because I don't always know when she goes and I am not always there. I really don't want everything she sits on to get dirty. She is such a sweet kitten and I think a lot of her issues are because she was a 'wild' cat. If you could give me any advice about how to manage and correct these problems I would appreciate it.  Also this is my first cat (by myself) so I am not sure that these problems are as irregular as I perceive them to be. She is scheduled for more shots and being spade, but I want to start working on these issues immediately

Answer
Hi Jessica!  I would definately recommend to have a fecal test done by your veterinarian, as the bowel movements you have described are typical of a cat with an intestinal parasite.  This is completely normal, as all kittens and puppies need to be dewormed, sometimes several times.
What type of food are you feeding her?  Do not switch foods often or abruptly, as this can cause a stomach upset as well.  Human food shouldn't be given, with the exception of some boiled boneless/skinless chicken.
If you are feeding her milk, this is also a cause of diarrhea.  Cats, contrary to popular belief, are lactose intolerant.  Their livers can not digest the sugars that cow's milk contains.  This would cause frequent diarrhea.
Using the baby wipes is an excellent idea.  It is in the instinct of a cat to groom itself.  The reason why she may not be grooming that area, is because it's probably sore from the diarrhea.  I would definately recommend a vet visit to determine the cause of the diarrhea, and once treatment is received, you shouldn't see this problem again!
Congrats on your new baby, and please keep me posted as to how she does!
Many get well wishes to her,
Hilary
