Question
I have been taking my dog to the vet for her skin allergies for 4 years,They say it looks like a yeast infection on the outside of her skin. And said she will eventually have elephants skin syndrome all over her body. They were giving her steroids and then told me they couldn't give them to her anymore, they gave me a shampoo that hasn't worked and I know it is driving her crazy. Is there anything I could do from home to help her since my vet is not giving her the medicine anymore or what should I do ?

Answer
If they have identified the yeast infection, why aren't they treating it with appropriate antifungal medication? Skin infections caused by yeast are very treatable with oral medications such as Ketoconazole or Itraconazole. Steroids is the wrong thing for her to be on.

I will be quite honest with you and say that you need to seek a second opinion. The best option is to find a boarded veterinary dermatologist in your area. If there is a vet school near where you live they usually have one on staff. She may need to be allergy tested, or go through a food trial to determine what she is allergic to. However, effectively treating a yeast infection may go a long way in improving her signs.

Dermatology can be challenging for general practitioners so if you decide not to seek out a dermatologist, at least make sure your new regular vet is comfortable with treating complicated derm. cases and does not just pull out the steroids.
