Question

I recently purchaced a pea puffer, the first few days he was pretty normal, but now it seems that he has to fight to keep his tail from floating. Hes been swiming around vertically and going under a plant to keep him down, even then he is vertical. Is this normal? Is he just trying to hide? I would greatly appreciate any advice you have to offer. Thank You!

Steph

Answer
Hi Steph;

Make a 25% water change and see if that helps. If the tank is fairly new he could be affected by new tank syndrome toxins. It's possible he is having a swim bladder problem that is causing trouble with his equilibrium. Constipation can cause that too. Try feeding him a variety of foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and even green peas once in awhile to help his digestion.

How long has the tank been set up?
What kind of food does he eat?
Are there other fish that may be chasing him?
