White spots on fish

Question
Hi Karen! Hoping you can point me in the right direction with this one.  I have two fancy goldfish in a 55 gal tank.  Recently one of my fish started showing signs of a white, slimy patch on the base of his tail.  It's important to note that his fins are not at all affected.  I took pictures and showed them to an aquarium specialist to recommended using Melafix (which is an antibacterial).  A week later and instead of getting better, now my other fish has white patches (three on top of his head and one next to his gills).  Now I'm worried.  They are eating well don't seem too distressed.

Have done water changes and the levels are okay.  Obviously the Melafix isn't working.  Any ideas?  Thanks Karen.

Answer
Dear Celeste,
Although I can't be sure without actually seeing your fish. I bet your fish may have some type of Fungus. And using a fungus medication may be best. I know Melafix is a really good medication, but it may not treat fungal infections as good as a real anti-fungal medication might. Melafix -can- be combined with Pimafix with is a anti-fungal medication that is all natural and safe.
Or I've also had great sucess with doing daily 50% or larger water changes and gravel vacuumings, as well as using Jungle Brand's Fungus Clear with good results. Try the Jungle tablets and make sure to do those vital water changes, even though the medication label may say not to, it's completely safe and when you do the water change, just redose with the medication. I know you mentioned you have done water changes but it's very important to do them at least everyday because water changes can help cure many fish diseases. Make sure you don't have uneaten food or anything else such as a clogged gravel bed or filter which can provide a breeding ground for fungus infections of fish.

I really hope this helps, best of luck!
Karen~
