cryptorchid in mini

Question
Hi I've just recently purchased a 2 year old mini stallion. I took him in to be gelded the vet said hes only got 1 testical down. He gave him a hormone shot to try to increase the chances of him dropping it. But said to call in two months to schedule surgery its gonna cost alot. But I've read sometimes minis won't drop till their almost three to four years of age. This was to be my daughters pony after training but I'm afraid if I keep him and wait that long my daughter will not ever get a chance to ride him(she'll get to big). I will not put here on a stallion. To many mares around us. My question is should I wait that long for it to drop or pay the money now?

Thanks yvonne

Answer
Hello,
I know that sometimes cryptorchid minis will get very "studdish", more so than stallions, if left "entire" and not gelded (just so you know!)
I personally would wait until he's 4,(I'm not rich, and don't have loads of money to spend on gelding a cryptorchid! Probably like you!) because many minis really don't drop until they are 4.
But, since your daughter wants to ride, I would get another mini (if you possibly can).  My younger sister rode our first mini until she was ten (she was 60 pounds...).  Then once your mini is outgrown, you can drive them!  In the meantime, you can wait for your stallion to drop.
If you still don't know what option is best, discuss it with your vet again; see what he thinks.

Hope this helped!
