Question
I have a 6y.o. that is chewing on the trees.  He is a little over weight so I know hes not hungry. If its boredom, what can I do to entertain him?  He has full range of the pasture and can go into the barn whenever.  Any ideas?

Answer
Dear Darlene:
I feel your pain. I had a gelding once who tried to eat half of my barn. Nothing short of a hot wire would keep him from chewing. I think you are quite right that it is boredom. Does your horse have company or is he alone? If he's alone - is there any possibility that you could find a buddy for him? I would definitely do something to keep him off the trees- fence them off or run a hot wire around them - even consult with your vet and a local nursery to see if there isn't something bitter and non-toxic (to horse and to tree) that you could paint onto the trunks that might discourage him.
You might also look for paddock toys like paddock balls (made specifically for horses). My horses have always enjoyed playing with buoys that are used on the sides of boats to keep them from coming into contact with the dock. Be wary about things that can be hazardous like tires. There are also an assorment of chew toys that can be suspended safely in paddock or can be mounted to posts. Of course plenty of excercise is always good - he may be too tired to bother to chew the trees.
Best wishes - hope this is of some help.
