My bunny is a tort, dark on the outside, and has lighter hair close to his body. I noticed a spot on his back that was light, like the hair close to his body, rather than on the outside. As I moved the hair, I saw a scab (?) and a bunch of dark flake like stuff, looked kinda like dirt, but it was just over the scab, in like a ball. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I'll definately take him to the vet if need be, but I really don't want to spend the 100$ + if they are just going to tell me he has a little scab.

I really really appreciate any and all advice.

If you remove some of the dirt and put it in water, does it turn red?  If so, it is flea dirt and he would need to be treated for fleas.

If not, it could just be a scab, he could have scratched himself by accident.

Thanks for the fast reply!

How would I go about treating him for fleas? Also, is there a way to prevent them?  He is our only pet and never goes outside, so where he got them from, I have no idea.

Thank you again, I really appreciate it.

Answer
If it is fleas, you can get a flea comb and comb them out (which is time consuming), or you can get Advantage for cats and use that.  Do not use Frontline, that has caused many rabbit deaths.

If you have another pet, they can be transmitted.  Or you could have had someone come over who had been around another animal who had fleas.  Or you could have fleas in your floor or carpet.
