Question
QUESTION: Yesterday I had my female bunny neutered...The vet told me that she won't eat the first day 'cause of anestetic. But , today , my bunny didn't eat either , she only eats hay and only if I handfeed her , she pushes everything else away. She urinates but she doesn't poop.I heard that somewhere that diagestive system needs some time to start working again after anestetic.Don't know what I should do , help!          thanks in advance

ANSWER: Hi Nikola. I think your bunny is just in pain right now and does not feel real great. Keep offering her the hay. You might also try giving her about a teaspoon of old fashioned rolled oats. Not the instant kind. That will temp her to eat and stimulate her appitite. If she doesn't eat the oats and does not resume her regular routine overnight you should call your vet and ask questions. After all, your vet  is the best person to know what is usual and what is not. Maybe you should call now, just to be sure. Your vet won't mind you calling and it would put your mind to rest and let the vet know early if something is not quite right. Animals really do feel pain and this has been a big event for her. I think she will be back to normal in a couple of days, but you should call your vet just to be sure. Let me know how she does.   Pat

QUESTION: Hey , me again.Turns out that my vet isn't so fammiliar with rabbits. And to make things even worse that is the best vet institute in my country.Ok , to get to the point , this morning my bunny pooped for the first time after operation , but her poo wasn't round and solid as usual , it was smaller, black, grouped n' it didn't have the round shape. She ate a bit of carrot this morning , I belive that's a good thing. Her appetite is preety poor right now , n' her poo also worries me.Should I get any medications that will increase her appetite?

Answer
Hi Nikola. Finding a good rabbit vet is not always easy, even here. Did your bunny's poo look like a small bunch of black shiny grapes? If so that is good. All rabbits produce these feces. However you don't usually see them because, as disgusting as is sounds, your bunny usually eats these. They are not completely digested like the larger round droppings. They have lots of necessary bacteria and nutrition that is a must for your bunny. Try giving her a bit of the rolled oats or barley. Just a teaspoon, no more. See if that doesn't help. Or you might try a couple of sunflower seeds. Again, just a couple. You don't want to upset her intestinal tract. I'm sure she would appreciate a little twig from an apple tree if there is one around there. Make sure it hasn't been sprayed with insecticide. Is she eating any of her hay? That is especially important for her right now. You might also try to give her a small slice of sweet potato. I hope she starts feeling better. Without the imput of a good vet it is difficult to know what the problem is or what to do. Please keep me informed or her condition...I will be thinking of you.    Pat
