Question

Wanda is the little br
Hi Sandra,

We've spoken many times. My pet rat (doe) Wanda who is 2 yrs 4 months old has a huge lump appear under her belly. It is slightly to one side near her hind legs on the underside.

I'm seems to have appeared overnight (Sunday)as I check her regularly for lumps.

Her and her cage mate Simba have both just been treated for mites 2x and they have gone. Wanda only had a couple of tiny scabs through this and I caught it early and the mites have gone.

I'm terrified of a tumor. I took her to an exotic specialist here in England yesterday morning, and she felt the lump and said she couldn't tell if it was a tumor or abscess...or it could be an abscess developed on top of a tumor!? I wasn't very happy at this diagnosis (or not so much of a diagnosis!).

She said to book her straight in for surgery. I had explained this had happened overnight and that the growth rate is very quick! I said I was reluctant to have surgery because she is over 2 years old (although of course I would if necessary) and we don;t know if she needs it.

She then said if it was an abscess, Baytril may bring it down over the next week. So I said I would rather do this and then consider my options.

Wanda is running around as normal, she doesn't seem to kow the lump is here. She lays on it and it doesn't seem to hurt when I touch it. She is eating drinking and acting totally normally. She is a very active rattie! This is also why I was reluctant to go straight to surgery.

I really really need some advice! I live in Norfolk, Norwich and she is the 2nd vet I have used and is an exotic specialist.

What would you do in my situation and in your experience? I really appreciate your help.

Kind regards,

Amanda.

Answer
Can you show me a photo of the abscess?  I have had alot of personal issues at home here so I am very sorry for taking so long to write.

I am hoping to see an abscess to be honest, it sounds like that is what it may be but some tumors do pop up out of the blue.
