Bumblefoot infection

Question
Hi Sandra,

I did some google searching for some info on the bumblefoot infection my little has, and it is exactly the same as you had posted here on your page,

http://www.sandyscrittercity.com/swollenfootinfection.htm

I was glad I got treatment for him, (chlorpalm) and after 6 days the swelling has went down alot on his feet area, but the leg area is still quite fat and swollen, he does not appear to be in pain anymore, can I continue with this med for him, or would you be sure I need "trimethoprim-sulfa" to make him better. Also can this bumble foot completly heal?

He's not in a cage at this point, I made a large barrier on the ground with clean sheets (every other day) to walk on so he doesn't walk in anything dirty. Can you recommend and thing I could get at the drug store to help clean and maybe draw out the infection faster?

Thanks for your great info!

John

Answer
There is no way to really draw out the infection that I can think of in the form of medication. However, you can make a solution using hibicleanse and warm water and dip the rats feet in it a few times, patting dry, and applying neosporin ointment on it.  Keeping the cage super clean is also key.  What to do is litter box train the rat.  I am making a page on how to do it in about ten minutes soon as I finish with a few more questions from this site so refer to that a little bit later on by going to sandyscrittercity.com and looking for my newest page on litter box training.

Also, I do prefer trimeth-sulfa for this as this antibiotic does penatrate pus better than many drugs.
