rat with bulging white eye

Question
About a week and a half ago I found an adult (guessing) brown rat along side the road with a little blood coming out of it's nose and mouth and it seemed disoriented and stunned.  I took it home and put it in a critter aquarium to see if it survived.  It has since started eating soft food and cheese.  It seems to spend most  of it's time in his house but moves around fine.  Then in just the last couple of days I noticed it's left eye slightly swelling.  Then quickly it seems to be bulging more and turned completely cloudy white.  I have started giving him antibiotics in food - doxycycline just today but fear it may be too late even though he is still eating.  I have read other web sites and assume it is some sort of serious traumatic injury or abscess.   I have heard people saying they have had similar bulging eye issues and that they can even have their eye pop out and die.  I am not sure where to go from here.  Doesn't seem like vet's like to see wild rats.  Any ideas / info much appreciated.

Answer
Dont tell the vet the rat is wild...simple.  I have had many wild rats and never told the vet. I just said it was antisocial.  A good exotic vet will not turn it away, but keep it to yourself anyhow.  It wont cause any disease or rabies etc...so no worries there either.  The rat may need the eye removed. it could be infection. It depends on how far you want to go with this little critter. Where are you located? If you dont want to keep it, you can turn it over to a wild life rehabber. There are many that people dont know about. Do you have a photo?
