baby parrot problem

Question
I have a hatchling parrot who has what appears to be a hernia, the small (size of a pin head) that was outside the body has now dried and appears to be causing no problem at all. it is now 5 days old and appears happy and has been eating and passing poo easily, but over the last twenty four hours appears to have retained food in the lower half of his crop, I have fed water overnight and have massaged the crop which appears to be very soft and maliable, so would doubt whether it has stopped completely.  I would be grateful if you could let me know whether the heria is likely to correct itself and if not at what time  do you think i can I have this corrected by the vet and also what is the best way to correct the crop.  I have been informed that I should use a small drop of cider vinegar, but doubt the validity of this as I am sure it would sour the crop as well.  I only have two chicks from this brood and the other baby is fine.  Hope you can help.  I am just a private breeder who only has two babies twice a year from my one pair of greys.

thank you in advance

Answer
Hi, Mary.  Thanks for posting!

I can't advise you on this because I don't know if what this baby has is, in fact, a hernia.  You need to consult an avian veterinarian on this problem.  The crop doesn't have to stop completely for there to be a crop problem.  It becomes a more serious problem when the crop stops working completely.  The vet can perform a test to see if there is any bacteria or yeast problem in the baby's crop.
