Keeping wild mouse happy?

21 15:33:06

Question
I rescued a young mouse from my cats yesterday morning, it had been hiding in my husbands shoe, and managed to get away with only a tiny scratch. I think it is a little girl and I would put it at about a month old. It is rather unlikely that I will be catching another as I have 4 prolific mousers in the house. It charmed me by being active and sweet, and still not running away or trying to bite me. I am unsure if it will be okay by itself, or if it needs the stimulation of another mouse? Is there a way to make it happy as an "only child"?

Answer
Dear Penny,

Most opinion is that wild mice are only happy in the wild.

That being said, although mice want companions, male pet mice live alone because they fight with other males.  They need a lot of extra quality, physical, people-time to be happy.  Unless she lets you hold her with bare hands, you won't be able to give her the companionship she needs, and she probably won't be able to bond with you like a mouse wants to do.  On the other hand, if the only other option is to let her go in a house full of cats, she's better off with you.

If you keep her as a pet, devote as much love and attention to her as you can.  I have had 'only mice' numerous times and they seemed to consider me a fellow mouse.

I hope I have helped.
