puppy does not like to go for walk

Question
My son bought a boxer puppy (6 months old) from a pet store that had too many dogs, she shared a 3x3 box with two other dogs.  I know it is bad to buy from these people, but they wanted a dog and could not stand to see the puppy in these conditions.  the issue is the dog is not leash trained obviously and does not like to go for a walk.  She likes to be in her crate, but does come out and play and seems to become more like a dog.  Any help to get this beautiful sweet dog to become more like a boxer puppy.

We have a boxer and I know how happy they are.  Our dog can't wait to go for a walk.  Any advice would be appreciated.  We want to help the puppy become secure and love to go for a walk.  They do live in Las Vegas where it is really hot and I know boxers can't take the heat.  My son walks the dog then sits down with it and talks to her and pets her then stands up and the dog can't wait to go home.  Sort of like a horse heading for the barn.

Thank you for any help they love the dog.

Answer
Hi Bonnie,

I understand your son felt about feeling sorry for the pup living like that.   If the only problem he is encountering is that she is not familiar with walking on a leash, he is very lucky.   Many dogs who come from situations like that are so used to going potty in their crates, housebreaking can be very difficult.

I feel like regular socialization and obedience training is all that this pup needs.

One thing that has always worked for me, to get a dog to enjoy walks is to find a treat that the dog really really likes -- something like an liver treat.    Start out with small walks, holding the treats in front of the dogs nose -- and when he walks a little distance, give him one.  Take her to public places such as Petco and Petsmart regularly -- lots of short little trips.  Once the pup has gained some confidence, everything will be fine.

I've attached a link to a great website that offers tips on many problems including what your son is experience.  I hope he can take a few minutes to read over it.  It is from a rescue group, but I think your son is experiencing some of the same issues you would expect from a rescue dog.
