Question
How to I get my shepherd to bark when someone comes to the door? He is a great puppy but he let a friend in today (that he did not know)without even a bark and then loved on him when he came in. I love that he is so friendly but I did get him for protection. when should the protection kick in? or is he just a very nice dog? Either way I love him he is a great dog.

Answer
Judi,

I am blessed with a dog that has an excellent temperament that does not bark at strangers also.  This is actually a very good sign!

Yes, you heard me right.  I try to teach my dogs to like everyone I like and not to bark at strangers, other dogs, small animals etc.

Believe me, if that is the case and your dog starts growling at someone, you won't want to keep that someone around.  Your dog will tell you when someone has ill intent even if your dog is taught to like everyone.  They are very good at picking up on things like that.  Many shepherd owners have refused people entry into their home after their dog had a reaction to a person.

Your dog is still a little young to go into protection mode but you will be grateful that she is not a barker.  Like I said, I've taught all my dogs NOT to bark on walks, in the yard, etc.  So if they do bark, I have a tendency to check it out.  Remember the Boy who cried wolf.  If you dog barked all the time, you wouldn't pay as much attention.

People are quite often afraid of german shepherds, even though you know they are friendly, strangers don't.

If you are really interested in protection and want to train your dog for that, try contacting your local German Shepherd Schutzund Club.  Schutzund is A German Shepherd training area that some compete in that combines, Obedience, Agility, Protection, Tracking and Endurance.  Members usually meet weekly or bi weekly to train their dogs in these areas.  It helps build the bond between you and gives you a way to communicate much more in depth.  It also builds you and your dogs confidence in each other.
