Answer
Firstly, the Australian Shepherd Club of America is not in favor of miniaturizing the breed.  And, yes there are grave dangers in breeding merle to merle, such as severe eye problems and deafness.  People who are breeding mini's and merle to merle are probably using inferior stock, and quite honestly, in a breed that already has such a small gene pool, you are better off with a reputable breeder.  If you don't know how to find one, check out the articles on www.wonderpuppy.net.  Stay away from pet stores, Internet puppy mills and backyard breeders.
Also, it looks like you are new to the breed - color is not the main thing.  You need to really be sure that you want a dog with strong herding and guarding instincts, and that you have the time and energy, and money (for training) to teach the dog how to channel those instincts appropriately.  This isn't a breed for beginners usually, although you can often find a less intense dog from Aussie rescue if you are willing to wait, and willing to take a dog that is a bit older.
If you are intent on a puppy, buy from a good breeder who offers a lifetime guarantee on the pup.  And do read up on the breed - if you have kids, especially.  They can be great with kids, but they can also nip and herd them if you don't know how to train them.
