Question
I was given a double merle sheltie female and told she was deaf.  I understand why and I believe she also has a vision loss.  In all I have read about this, I cannot find anything on whether a double merle ever loses their sense of smell.  I am working hard to socialize her but she will NOT show any interest in any kind of treat, leading me to believe she cannot smell.  Have you ever heard of such a thing in aussies?

Answer
If she's a new rescue, it may just be that she is fearful of her new surroundings and therefore reluctant to take food from your hand.  One way to test this is to wait a few days until she's more comfortable, then try to offer something really delectable, such as chicken or beef, rather than any kind of prepared dog treat.  I've not heard but one mention of loss of smell as a possible consequence of homozygous merle genetics, although I suppose it's possible.
