Question
QUESTION: Hi I have had my dog for about 3 years and he is about 5 (not sure on actual age. He is a cross staffy. He uselly sleeps on our bed but for the last couple of months when we go to bed he starts shaking crying and keeps licking me. Why does he do this?
Just before I go to bed I take him out and feed him could it have anything to do with this. Also we have a 14 mounth old child could he be get jealous of her?

ANSWER: Hi David, Does the baby sleep in the same room and did this behavior begin when the baby came along?  Does the dog only do it when he is awake or does he do it when asleep?  Staffordshire terriers are very smart and usually a one person dog. He may be jealous of the baby and trying to get additional attention from you.  Or he could be nervous about the presence of the child.  Try giving him plenty of individual play time and see if that does not help him to calm down.  Let me know how it goes and leave me some feedback.  Feel free to write again to keep me posted.  Thanks. Regards, Susan

QUESTION: HI, Thanks for the reply. The baby does sleep in the same room as us but the dog has just started doing this a few months ago. He only does it when hes awake and it lasts for around half an hour. I give him alot of attention and play with him all the time. My girlfriend doesnt give him that much attention but he doesnt bother her at night.

Answer
His breed is often times a one person dog. This may be why he is trying to tell you something.  Does he otherwise seem to be in good health?  Is he up to date on innoculations...?  Does he ever seem uncomfortable when laying flat on the floor?  It may be a medical problem that goes away once he is asleep, but gives him trouble falling asleep.  Have you rung up your vet to ask him/her for any suggestions?  Maybe give that a try and see what they have to say.  It may be an intestinal issue or something.  I would rule out any veterinary issues.  Keep me posted on his progress please. Thank you.  Regards, Susan
