13 Month old saint bernard ....

Question
I have a 13 month old saint bernard who began to be aggressive to strangers a little over the age of 10 months. I have had one animal trainer/behavioralist into our house to spend a week with him and he thought that the issue was his adolescent age and him trying to test his limits.  We quickly correct him and put him into a sit/stay when around anyone else. I have been keeping an eye on him and how he reacts to different situations and he is the worst when someone comes into his area, walking outside or into our house (even my parents house or brothers house he is the same) if we go into a house where people are already, he is fine but the introduction of new people does not go over well.  I have to leash him, lay him down and then have the new person give him a couple of commands and a treat then he is ok with them.  However, whenever another dog is around he is perfectly fine and friendly to the other owners (is it possible that he has been socialized so much to the point where he only associates good people with other dogs?  For the first six months we had him he went everywhere with us and met hundreds of people, all of which he had good experiences with)  A little more background information:  at 6 months he fractured his leg and was out of commission for about 2 months, and in and out of vets and surgeon's offices at least a half a dozen times, maybe he could associate strange people to the vet (this behavior started about 6 weeks after he was back in action from this injury).  Corrib is an amazing dog and is very friedly to everyone he knows.  He is my second saint and I love the breed and know that this behavior is not like them, he comes from show lines, and is absolutely beautiful.  It has taken a lot of work to get his muscle tone and his gait back to where they need to be in order for him to begin competing, he stacks and stays well, but I cannot bring him into a conformation ring (and judge) behaving the way he is, of course my main concern is the people we run into everyday during our walks, but I'm not sure what to do.  I have had some suggestions in the past to have a professional trainer work with him but I'm not sure that's going to help.

Any suggestions you can provide would be GREATLY appreciated!

Chris

Answer
Chris - I can help a bit, but it is hard via email to plan out some behavior modification etc.  So, where do you live?  I can possibly refer you to a person with experience and qualified.  I could also do an official consult over the phone if you don't live near Indianapolis (this will include phone time, video etc).  I think you are doing some great things so far, but maybe a little one-on-one could help too.  He sounds well socialized but the long injury period may have worked a number on him and some re-work may be necessary.  Let me know where you live and we can go from there?
