Urination

Question
We have two dogs, a twelve year old neutered female Airedale and a 6 year old netured male Standard Poodle.  The older dog has been incontinent, and has accidents in the house and is in a doggie diaper at night.

Recently the other dog has begun marking on the corners of the furniture in the house.  It can be once or twice a day.

I assume this is related to the older dog's behavior but have no idea how to deal with it.

Thank you for any advice you can furnish.

Answer
There are medications for female dogs that are incontinent; sometimes it's something as simple as giving the dog low dose estrogen.  The problem is similar to human females after menopause; they "dribble."

I would investigate this with your vet; that would eliminate the need for a diaper.

As you probably know, dogs do not urinate solely for the reason of bladder relief.  It is a marking behavior, staking off one's property, and males and females alike do it.

Since you have these scents in your home, the other dog may be resorting to this behavior as a sort of "tit for tat" - "this is MY house, too!"

Preventing any further urination (through medication), and thoroughly and completely removing present smells, is the only solution to the male's behavior that I can suggest.
