6 year old beagle and 2 month old puppy

Question
Hello,
we are having trouble with our 6 year old Beagle, Abby, getting along with our new just over 2 month old puppy (beagle/terrier mix), Rascal. Rascal will try to play with Abby, but Abby will first try to shy away, then if Rascal does not stop, she well begin Baying at him, in an aggressive manor. She has not snipped at him, nor will she lunge toward him (she has never been aggressive, and use to try to play with new dogs). We got Rascal, because we were told Abby was bored/depressed and needed a playmate (though we take her for walks every day, and play with her whenever she is in the mood), so we really hope there is something we can do (we wanted Abby to be happy, not mad). Some have said we just have to give her time and Abby will get use to Rascal. We have only had Rascal for 5 days now, so maybe I haven't given the situation enough time, I just don't want to take any chances. Is there anything we can do to help Abby feel at ease?
Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
James & Stefanie

Answer
True that things should settle, and you should expect trouble for at least a week. You could try some things to get her to accept him. Sit with both dogs near, pay loads of attention to Abby when the pup is near, give her treats etc. Praise her for just being near the pup without reaction. Also make sure the pup doesnt push boundries too much, Abby needs space and time away from the pup, she also needs individual time with mum and dad, without the new addition around.

As I said, things should settle much more, Abby is probably just a bit confused about the whole thing.

Good luck.
