Question
Hello, I have a 5 month old female Newfoundland puppy named Emma. I have had her since she was 8 weeks old, when I got her from an Amish breeder in Indiana. I have noticed that she is showing signs of dominance. I have looked into obedience training in my area and they require that the dog be at least 6 months old to enroll. What are some things I can do at home to start handling her? Emma's behavioral problems include barking, growling, jumping, biting, pulling on clothing, running away when called, and humping peoples legs. I think perhaps the biting may be from being home alone all day while I go to classes and my parents work. I know that I need to assume the role as leader, but what are some ways to prove that to Emma especially since she is an outdoor dog? Also do you have any specific training tips for the biting, growling, and barking? Thanks so much!!

Answer
Dear Mikki, You hit the nail on the head, the whole family must become pack leaders. You can establish this by properly exercising the dog at the heel, you must walk Emma daily, not just let her play in the yard (no matter how many acres you have). Then you must give her limitation, boundaries and leadership. She must understand that no means no and you can touch her neck to redirect her attention to you, if she does not respond, gently roll her onto her side and hold her there until she relaxes. If you are unable to do any of these things, call a canine behaviorist in your area, they will come to your home, so you do not have to worry about the 6 month thing and most trainers do not have the education the a behaviorist will. I just finished a Newfoundland myself and he is doing great now. Leave me some feedback and let me know how you are doing. And thank you for writing. Happy Thanksgiving. Regards, Susan
