Question
I have a 16 week pug puppy who recently began humping my 14 year old cat. Needless to say she isnt crazy about it. Is this a domanating behavior and how do I stop it?

Answer
Hi, MaryAnn,

Thanks for the question.

Generally speaking the "humping" behavior is the result of a strong desire to play that's being thwarted in some way. I'm going to assume that your pug wants to play with the cat, but that the cat doesn't want to play with the pug. This creates tension and frustration, which comes out as humping.

And by the way, technically speaking, there's no such thing as dominant behavior. The new of relating to these aspects of canine behavior are threatening and non-threatening postures. If you're interested to know more, here's a link that explains why: http://tinyurl.com/2q2esp

If you want to solve the problem, I'd simply distract the pup with a toy and throw it for him to chase.
