Question
Hello,

We recently moved to a new home, and our 10 month old puppy is having a
very difficult time adjusting.  For the most part he is okay, but there are still
so many boxes around and furniture changing places constantly, that it
seems like it's hard for him to identify this new place as home.  He will
spontaneously have barking fits for no reason and will refuse to go to his
crate to sleep, despite having no issues with this in our previous home.  His
food and water are in the kitchen, where they were before, and his crate is
near our bed...but he still seems to have a lot of confusion.  Any advice?

Answer
All dogs are happier with a routine.  They like to know what to expect from their people and their environment.  The routine that your puppy has grown up and become familiar with is gone.

I know it may be asking a lot, but probably the sooner you get everything put away and start establishing a new normal routine, the better it will be.

You may need to resort to re-training him to his crate.  Dogs do not "generalize" so just because he liked his crate in his old house doesn't mean he will like it in the new house.

Here is some information on barking and on crate training, just in case your memory may have faded:
