6 month old puppy recently spayed

Question
I have a 6 month old puppy recently spayed (11 days ago). Just reintroduced her to my 18 month old male dog. They've been together since she was 6 weeks old.  Her behavior is as follows:  growling, snapping and doesn't want anything to do with the male dog.  Will this pass? and why is she acting this way.  They are both Miniature Schnauzers.

Answer
Since you just reintroduced them, I'm assuming these two were separated since your bitch was spayed.  This is rather like introducing them for the first time.  Your male may be attempting to establish rank or may be demonstrating behaviors that elicit a fear response in your bitch, who was recently very physically sensitive to pain inducing behaviors.  Unfortunately, many veterinarians do not offer pain medication for dogs after the spay/neuter, which I consider absolutely crucial.  Many dogs associate the pain they are suddenly feeling with normal behaviors and this association can provoke problems long after the pain itself is gone.  Additionally, the sudden removal of hormones before the first heat cycle (especially if the bitch is close to the first heat cycle and there's a lot of estrogen flowing) can induce unusual behaviors.  I suggest you first report this to your veterinarian, as some short term hormonal therapy might be in order. You also want the surgical site evaluated to be certain there is no underlying infection brewing.  Following this, providing everything is fine, you want to observe the two dogs together.  Is the male respecting her signals of avoidance?  Is he persisting in trying to interact with her despite the signals?  If he is being overly dominant or obnoxious, you need to put him on a house tab (long lightweight leash) and remove him.  Give him another job, such as a few minutes of positive reinforcement training.  If he learns to respect her signals, she may eventually approach him to re-establish the relationship.  Please repost with further developments.
