Chow Mix Grooming Problem

Question
Hi Ms. Connor!

I have a 2 1/2 year old chow mix.  She is an outdoor dog and is never allowed in the house.  (My husband is severly allergic when indoors.)  She is a very well behaved and obedient dog.  She has never been to the groomers and desperately needs it.  I have tried to take her, but she gets really nervous.  She will stay in the kennel, will not allow the groomer to put a leash on her, and WILL NOT get on the grooming table.  I'm not sure what I can do.  She is too big and strong for me to groom on my own. She simply over powers me and bites at the brush, comb, clippers, etc.  Do you have any advice as to what I can do to get her cleaned up?

Answer
Unfortunately, there are dogs that are unwilling (due to breed, disposition or basic lack of habituation to it) to be groomed.  These dogs require sedation and grooming at the veterinary clinic.  When at the clinic, she should be shaved down (unless you live in a cold climate).  If this is impossible, due to climate, you need to bring in a certified applied animal behaviorist who can evaluate the dog and attempt to teach you how to create positive associations with being groomed.  Even with that, she will require the veterinary clinic for grooming, as she is of a size and breed mix that will create for her a larger problem with the "wrong" groomer.  In future, do NOT acquire a DOG that will exacerbate your husband's allergies.  Poodles (standard or toy) are hypoallergenic, are extremely intelligent and charming, and make wonderful companions.  Leaving a dog outdoors in a situation of emotional and psychological isolation is abusive.
