New FEAR behavior of going for walks

Question

Spock on Thanksgiving
Dear Anne, PLEASE help! Our 4-years old Lab/Daschund/Beagle mix has developed a new fear of the outdoors. He used to look forward to walking through the woods leash free (always supervised and within vision), but now he is stubborn to go outdoors, and he seems to prefer to be on a leash. He has very loving parents, but he suddenly is reluctant to walk with his Dad unless Mom comes too. Sometimes he even shakes with fear. How can we ease his fears and modify his behavior? He is our little Son and he has always been trained with love and positive reinforcement. Thanks in advance!

Answer
Any time a dog displays a new and uncharacteristic behavior, I always want the owner to have a vet check the dog first for any possible physical causes.  Once that's ruled out, I would follow a protocol similar to Patricia McConnell's in "The Cautious Canine".
