Question
Hi
I have 2 not neutered male dogs- 8 yrs old and 10 months old. they are about the same size and are very attached to each other. Today the elder one started to sexually attack the younger one- the younger one just lays down and doesnt allow it. i know that this behavior is normal and it is about power with dogs- but should I allow it or do i have to stop it ?

Answer
This is not a sexual attack.  Humping can be dominance related but it is also a signal of affiliation and can be an attempt by one dog to control the behavior of another in an anxious situation.

The older dog may be making a statement of rank since the 10 month old is approaching a first level of adult maturity; OR he may be acting out of anxiety regarding the younger dog's behavior.  There's only a PROBLEM if this "attack" results in outright, full blown aggression between the dogs.  The younger dog may be lying down not to 'avoid' but as a calming signal.  If this behavior worries you, redirect the older dog the moment you see him offering it.  Call him, ask for a 'sit', then reward heavily with praise.  If any further behaviors develop between the two which concern you, repost.

Positive reinforcement training is always necessary with any dog, no matter its size, type or temperament.  This establishes your psychological 'rank' and helps your dogs to be calmer, knowing you are in control.  To learn about it, go to Dr. Ian Dunbar's online video training:
