Kitten is pooping on my bed :(

Question
One of my friend's cats recently had a batch of kittens. I fell in love with one and took him home. I was worried about litter training him so for the first few days I kept him in the bathroom with his litter box and food, and to my surprise he used the litter box the first time with no problems whatsoever. He was using it fine up until this morning, my husband and I woke up and found poop on our bed :( I figured maybe he had just had a little accident but I washed the bedding and made the bed and then about a half hour later he had pooped on it again. I've done a little more research on this issue and the only responses I've really got have been about the litter box not being clean, but I've been cleaning it daily and he knows exactly where it is. I need to understand why he is doing it and I need to know how to stop it before it becomes an issue.

Answer
Brandy,

Kittens don't go very far if they have to use the litterbox. You may want to try keeping one in your bedroom until he grows a little bit. Also leave a nightlight on so he can find the litterbox easily at night.

Another thing is that when you get a kitten you should get 2 kittens. He is used to having siblings to play with and to cuddle with. He is alone and insecure now, and he may be reacting to that by inappropriately eliminating. That is the only way he knows how to tell you. 2 kittens are easier than one to take care of because they keep each other amused which takes the pressure off of you to constantly give the kitten attention, and it is comfort and companionship to the kitten when he is alone. Kittens are playful at that age and humans can't play kitty games with them like another kitten can.

If the kitten was weaned before 12 weeks then he didn't get the 'life training' and behavior training that the mother teaches them from 8-12 weeks. That includes proper litterbox use.

This may be helpful for you if there are more accidents:

Here is a 'receipe' for cat odor removal:

1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda
1 teaspoon of liquid soap
(3% hydrogen peroxide can be bought at most grocery and drug stores in pint and quart bottles).

Gently mix all ingredients in a non-metal container. Do not mix or shake vigorously!
The mixture is best used when fresh but can be stored. Do not keep mixture in an airtight container.  Have a VERY loose lid as baking soda and hydrogen peroxide when mixed together will release oxygen and an airtight container will explode. You can mix and keep it in large spray bottle (Home Depot, etc.) but a plastic liter or 2-liter soda bottle works just a well.
Always test for color-fastness. Hydrogen peroxide is a bleaching agent in stronger concentrations and can lighten materials that are not color-fast.

CLOTHING, COMFORTERS, AND BEDDING:
Put the items in the washing machine and pour in enough of the recipe to cover throughly. This might take a few gallons depending on the size of the load. Soak for at least 24 hours. Rinse and rewash using normal washing detergent. If any of the odor is still present, soak again for 24 hours, rinse and rewash.

A small area on a comforter can be spot treated by saturating the area throughly, letting it dry for 24 hours, then washing the comforter normally in the washer with detergent. Always check for color-fastness before using.

I hope this helps.
