My cat wont mate

Question
Dear Dr

I have a a 2yr 9mnt old Birman Tabby Point Female that I bred myself she was an only kitten from my last litter. She is the only one I have ever kept from my Queen (now neutered) So i was really looking forward to her having babies. I have never been able to work out if or when she is in season as she rarely speaks at all. (strange in Birmans) I have worked out that she rolls about and in more affectionate at certain times of the month so have taken her on 2 occasions to 2 different studs and she has refused to come out for her box and would not mate at all. She was so upset when she returned I have not tried again since.(both times were this summer) What should I do? She is not like any other birman I have had. She is much more withdrawn and hates cuddles and as I said does not really speak unless on the wrong side of a door. She is fit and healthy in everyother way just a little bit smaller than some.

Any advice would be welcome

Answer
Hi Jamie

This is certainly an unusual situation. I have come across a cat that had silent calls and so was missed when it came to having her mated.
1.  Can you confirm the mating was not too close?
2.  Alhough she is displaying some signs of coming on heat she is not calling so perhaps there is some underlying problem. Can I suggest that you pay a visit to the vets and have her checked out, perhaps a scan to ensure no internal problems.
3.  Finally I would suggesy you consider changing her diet slightly to see if thatencourages her.
Give her a chance this spring to see if she is a slow maturing cat
