Stressed Amazon

Question
I recently had my 14 month old yellow head amazons wing clipped for the second time in her life. She reacted very violent at the vets office.  Later at home she bled.  I found a clipped blood wing.  I stopped the bleeding and looked after her myself as I would not take her back to the vet.  She seems healthy now but she no longer trusts me.  I cannot touch her anymore.  She reacts very violently.  Will she ever forget what I did to her and trust me again.
Thanks

Answer
I'm so sorry you had such a bad experience. You were doing the right thing and it's unfortunate that this happened.

Your companion will trust you again, although yes, it's going to take a lot of patience on your part and some extra effort.  I don't think this will be a problem for you though.  It sounds like you're pretty dedicated to her.

I'm limited in my space here, but I've got step by step instructions at how to calm her down.  Check my site and look under 'screaming and biting'  - you'll start from scratch, as if she's brand new to you and re establish your relationship in no time.

Now that she's clipped, you can maintain it yourself.  Her wing feathers will molt one or two at a time (probably in Fall, so you don't have to worry about this for a while) and when that happens, new feathers will grow in and be very obvious.  When they out grow the clipped feathers around them, just snip it off to keep them even.  You won't have to do the entire wing at once anymore.

In the meantime, when she's over her fear, make sure you gently hold and stretch her wings out regularly so she gets used to you touching them in this way for when it's time to do a little clip.

Check my site and let me know how you make out ok?
