Question
Castor the Conure
Hi
I have a 9 week old Jenday Conure.
I understand not all birds mature at the same time and that he has had a shock changing homes from a busy breeder to a quiet home with no other birds.
However, this little one appears to really be taking his own time weaning. I am still hand feeding 2 and some days 3 times a day. I have been introducing him to a range of fruit, veges and pellets, all which he nibbles at but would never eat enough independently without the hand feeding.
How does one make the final step from hand feeding to self feeding without the bird losing condition?
Many thanks!
Kristin
Answer-- Time to cut the feeding amount by half in volume AND only feeding 2x's a day for about 3 days; then down to once a day for 3 days and then no more
These birds will opt for hand feeding for LIFE if you're willing to do it
Get a decent gram scale and start weighing. That way you'll know if he's losing weight to the point of it being serious
As for interesting and good foods to get him eating on his own, check here

You'll learn about weighing and see how we do it too
