Question

Hi i recently started working with a three year old thoroughbred who is still very green. When she first came to the barn she was starved so i have been focusing on gaining more muscle for her to be able to learn dressage, and jumping later on. But the thing is, is that i have been working on bending her and doing "boxes" so she can gain muscles but it is very hard to keep her slow. I have gotten her to the point where she will slow down on the straight wall but when i turn her she speeds up. So with that i have been making her halt as soon as she speeds up and then making her back up a couple steps, then move forward again but even with that she speeds. i feel like the only way that i can get her to do a nice slow trot is when she is completely worn out and tired.
- if you have any advice it would be greatly appreciated !
thanks,
Rachel

Answer
Hello!
Alright, as soon as she turns the corner...make her to a 10 or 20 metre circle in the corner. This should slow her down. The faster she goes, the smaller the circle you make. Do that in every corner, one time around, and then try to try to trot all around. If she is still going quickly, keep doing your circles. Use ALOT of half-halts. ooh..but ok say when you are done one circle, and as soon as u get on the track again, stay in that corner, and do some more circles until she slows down. Let me know how you make out!
Thank you!
