How much could I sell my TB for?

Question
I have an 11 year old thoroughbred gelding.  He is a dark bay and about 16-16.2 hands high.  He has raced (has lip tattoo) but I do not have the papers on him as I bought him from a horse rescue.  He rides, jumps, loads, ties, stands.  He is a little under weight but putting it on steadily.  I purchased him for $1000 and he is just not the right fit for me.  He has been wormed, feet done recently and in great health.  How much do you think he would be worth?  With training he could do hunter/jumper.  We are in Texas if that makes any difference.

Answer
Hello Emily,

Without seeing your horse and based on the information provided, your horse could sell from anywhere from around $3500 at the top end to $1000.  This is going on the assumptions that currently your horse has no formal hunter/jumper training that he can be ridden by a intermediate rider and is sound with no vices.

If your horse is a good mover and has a natural jump you should start your asking price around $3500 if you are marketing him as a hunter/jumper.  However please be aware he is an older horse and will require additional training so that cuts down on his value.

Currently, in Texas the green started hunter/jumper thoroughbreds younger than your horse are typically selling at $10,000 and under.  Bloodlines, age, movement, training are all large factors in the price.

Should you have any additional questions, please let me know.

Smiles,
Jessica
