Horse photosensitivity

Question
Hello. My mare recently was diagnosed with photosensitivity due to eating Alseke clover. His liver was tested an he has mild damage. I'm going to put him on milk thistle, which I understand will help her with de-toxifying her liver as well as help rejuvenate the liver. My biggest concern is the multiple sores on her legs and helping her with the pain she is obviously in. She has a large white blanket patch on he back which will likely slough off, so she's in for more pain. What can I do to help her! Thank you kindly. Pat

Answer
Pat, I am not a Vet and my first advice has to be, call your Vet. That done,
I feel for you, watching your mare hurting, so, hope I can help. Alsike Clover poisoning is more common than most imagine, likely because of the 'regional' growth of this plant. Had to do some phone calls and research on this one.
Always, your first choice is Licensed Vet. care. What I have learned is first remove all sources of Alsike, further to that, take her off all clovers, alfalfa etc. and feed only grass hay. High protein feeds put stress on liver/organs. There is no cure for liver damage although if damage is not extensive many livers regenerate and can be healthy again.
Now to your main question, the sores and her pain/comfort.
First here is keep her out of the sun. Apply zincoderm to all affected areas to prevent further damage from sun.
The affected areas should be cleaned and then use an ointment typically used for "scratches" on horses heels. Another is T-zon cream, others similar. Severe cases can scar.
To sum up my opinion, get her off high protein feed,
Get her out of the sun.
Clean all affected areas well, apply "scratches ointment" to sores and cover all areas around with zincoderm.
Repeat daily or when needed.
If initial poisoning was not too bad and you catch it early, treat agressively this can be a fairly short term problem with every hope of almost complete recovery.
Hope this has helped, you may want to confirm with your Vet.
Good luck, I am hoping for her and You.
