Dont nurse young mouse pup with bread

Question
I just had a very terrible experience with my baby that I rescued (she was 5 days old when I found her).  I had read multiple sources on the internet saying that you can soak a piece of bread in formula and let them feed themselves.  I tried it and she bit off a piece and it got stuck in her mouth and she nearly choked on it.  I wanted to share this, so that it doesn't happen to anybody else's baby.  Do Not Try!  After all of the sleepless nights, worrying, etc. she almost died because of the bread suggestion!  I'm going to try the clean cloth method as I've seen suggested by Natasha.

Answer
Dear Kseniya

Thank you so very very very much for the information. I have suggested bread and formula for babies closer to weaning, such as after 2 1/2 weeks. But if someone had asked me if I thought bread might work to nurse a little one I might have agreed. Now I know to warn people about that.

How old was she when she choked?  That's important for me to know.

I truly appreciate the information. Please keep me up to date on your pup and her story because I am trying to learn what works best and what their survival rate is.

Good luck to your little tyke.

Squeaks,

Natasha
