mouse has red under eye

Question
Hi there, I have a pet white mouse, called Smudge. recently he developed a redness under his left eye, which looks very sore (but then he doesn't seem to avoid it when cleaning himself). It doesn't seem to affect him as he still runs around in his wheel and eats etc normally. I bought some eye gel for small pets from 'Pets at Home' on Saturday and have been applying a small amount the last two days. The eye seems to be getting slightly better but I can't be sure as he moves so quickly. I am not too sure, but he may have something white in the eye now, but he may not, it's difficult to tell, it may just be the ointment on it. I am really posting this to see if you know of similar symptoms to his redness (under his left eye). As I said he seems normal otherwise, but hates being held to have this ointment applied. I don't want to hurt him but don't know what else to do. I have been seeing if it will get better before taking him to the vet. Any advice would be appreciated
Thanks Richard

Answer
Dear Richard,

You are doing exactly the right thing. I assume the ointment has an antibiotic in it? If not, you should switch to terramycin.

Some mice tolerate a finger on the eye better than a Q tip or other tool. Maybe you can have someone else hold him tight while you do it. That person should hold Smudge on their right palm, and with their left hand should be holding gently but very firmly to the base of his tail by his rump. They can have their right hand closed over him when he is struggling, and hold him just so you can access the eye. You should apply the ointment three times a day.

If it isn't better within about four days, do bring him to the vet.

Best of luck and health to Smudge.

Squeaks,
