Question
Hi, i got a green iguana since a year now and guess he was about 4 months when i got him. My problem/question is since about a 7-10 days at about 4-5cm of the ending of his tail he got a "bubble" and yesterday i noticed that the last 1-2cm of the tail got bit skinner and very hard when i touch it, it doesnt seem to bother him.
Food we give him +- all you put in your care list. temperature of basking is aswel what you recommend there, he has enough humidity and gets 1-2 hours a day straight sunlight , from what i read on the internet so far i understood it could be gangreen or something simular. hope you can help me out a bit here as the vets on this small island arent very well used to threating iguanas.
Thanks for your time

Answer
Hi Dieter,
You are correct in that it is most likely dry gangrene.  Sometimes we are lucky and the dead part breaks off on its own or when the iguana whips their tail. Some people are brave and attempt  to break it or cut it...(NOT RECOMMENDED!!)The best to do (and highly recommended)is to have it done by a vet.  It does not need to be a surgery with that tiny amount that is "dead".  A vet can use antiseptic cleanser on the area, coat with betadine and snip off the dead part, going up into the living, good tissue.  The reason it needs to be into healthy, living tissue is so that all the gangrene is gotten.  After the removal of the dead part, a vet will generally remind you to keep a very clean environment and to apply some antibiotic ointment for a few days. Any Vet should be able to do such a small amputation.
In most cases the tail will re grow.  When this happens, the new growth will look like a dark grey pencil eraser...
