Question
I have recently adopted a retired greyhound-he is 6years.  He is now clean in the house but for the past week and a half, he whines then begins to howl to go out at night to 'go'.  We let him out last thing at night (about 10.30pm) and he goes then, but then for the past two nights, he has had me up at 2am and 5am (it used to be once anytime between these times).

He should be able to hold it till morning surely, if not-once would be plenty.  How do i go about stopping this behaviour without waking the children!??

Answer
Is he only having to pee during the night, or is he doing both? How long do you leave water down for him in the evenings? Perhaps try picking up the water bowl a couple of hours before bedtime. It could be that he is filling up on water during the evening, or it could be the beginning of an infection. Your vet can do a urinalysis to determine whether or not there is an infection going on.

At least he is letting you know he needs to go out. I would not correct him for it, unless he's doing it and then running around the yard playing instead of pottying. If that's the case, then you could try a no-bark collar at night, which would correct him as soon as he started making noise. I would not do that, though, unless you know, for a fact, that he is only doing it so you'll let him out to play. You don't want to correct him for letting you know when he needs to go out to potty.
