Question
We currently have an Australian Shepherd and we are considering getting another one. I am concerned about the two dogs feeding off one another's energy levels. We do not have a fenced yard, so our dog currently gets her exercise by walks, off-leash dog park, playing fetch indoors running up and down the stairs, etc.. Do you think by getting a second Aussie they will wear each other out somewhat by playing or will they just become more energetic?

Answer
Getting a second dog can be a good idea in terms of companionship for your existing dog, but it also means twice the time dedicated towards exercise needs. It can also mean twice the trouble as they put their heads together to discover new ways of getting into mischief.

If they decide to play with each other, then they will do so in short burts, but it won't be a substitute for the regular exercise required.

We keep four dogs in the house at one time ranging in age from 13 all the way to 2 years. Our 2 year old male is quite a puppy at heart and seeks to play with some of his elders to help vent his neverending energy needs but not all the dogs will cooperate and play. When he does convince one to play, it happens in very short bursts of about 45 minute sessions. They play tag, tumble, tug, all while barking and play growling. They knock over pillows and people alike. Afterwards they settle down and relax.

We still have to take them out for walks, training and play time to vent off the remaining energy.

If you are prepared to double your canine care workload, then I do recommend a second dog, but if you are seeking to reduce the amount of time spent exercising the existing dog, this is not a good solution.
