Question
I have 2 poms: Buddy is 31/2 and DaiDai is 2 years of age. Buddy is still intact and DaiDai is neutered. They are both thinking that they are the alpha. Buddy isnt bad, we have had him for a long time. We just got daidai a week ago. THey both love to bark (which drives me nuts). I tell them a firm no and that doesnt seem to do the trick. If i pick up my purse they figure that I am going somewhere and than they start barking to the loudest level possible. Yesterday, they both escaped underneath my feet; than I start chasing them around the neighborhood and I think that they think it is just a game. I dont want to appear to be a fool running all over the trailer court but I dont know what to do with them and their behavior. Daidai tries to think that he is the alpha and has tried to bite me and my husband both. We are a little scared of him because of his mannerisms. He is a shelter dog and the family that we got him from said that the dad couldnt have him any more because he was allergic to the dog. Please help. I dont know what to do with them.

Answer
Well when they get out, don't run after them. When you run your showing that this a game. If you call them and/or have treats and slowly walk behind them or just stay at your house they should come back. As for the bite problem, when he bites, let him know that that behaviour is not allowed. A firm "no" and pushing him away should send them the message that you want them to receive. When they bark, get up if they are barking while looking out, and see if there a reason for them to bark. If not, then tell them "no" as you do now. If they do not respond, show them that your commands cannot be ignored. Hiting will only make them stop barking copletely and thats not good if someone breaks in. Just tell them "no" and move them to another area, where there is nothing to see. If this does not work let me know.
