Answer
Hey, Caroline,

Thanks for the question. I hope I can help out.
Have you tried praising him when he growls? If not, give it a shot and see what happens. When he growls, just say, "Good boy!" in a high, silly voice. "What a good boy you are!" Then tell him to go find a toy. (Does he know what that means? If not you may have to teach him.)
If you're wondering why I'd suggest such a crazy thing, it's because he's probably growling because of some kind of emotional tension, some sort of uncertainty. Praise tends to reduce emotional tension, it makes the dog feel good. And don't worry, it WON'T increase the growling. At worst it won't have any effect at all. But it very well could get him to stop. And if you do it often enough, followed by the "Go find a toy!" you may find that as soon as you come home, he'll go grab a toy and bring it to you.
If you want to read more about this technique (of using praise to "correct" an unwanted behavior) go to my blog, or use this direct link: http://www.tiny.cc/praise622

I hope this helps!
